The Name

Why "Top"? A Name That Bridges Two Languages

My Chinese name is Huangxu Gao (黄绪高) — Huangxu is the surname and Gao is the given name. I chose the English name "Top" because it sounds similar to "Gao," which means "tall" or "top" in Chinese, and it echoes the symbolism of "绪" in my name — the rising sun and the pursuit of excellence.

It is a correspondence I have always enjoyed: every sunrise I chase for my clients is, in a small way, written into my own name.

Biography

From a Yangshuo Village to the Avatar Mountains

Twenty-five years of English, guiding, and light.

1978 — Born in Yangshuo, Guangxi

Grew up in a small village among the karst peaks of Yangshuo, where the landscape became my first teacher in composition.

1996 – 2000 — Guangxi Normal University, Guilin

Majored in English Education. Four years in Guilin deepened my love for the Li River landscape and gave me the language foundation to work with international photographers.

2000 – 2005 — Teacher & Web Builder

Worked two years as an elementary school English teacher, then three years at a travel office building destination websites — my first taste of combining travel, language, and imagery.

2006 – 2016 — Licensed Tour Guide (CNTA)

Ten years guiding for CYTS, CITS, CTS and LJITS across Guilin and Yangshuo. Built 15-year relationships with local families who welcome photographers into private locations. Became a top Guilin landscape photographer along the way.

2016 — Went Full-Time Photographer

Transitioned fully into landscape and people photography, guiding dedicated photo tours and shooting for clients across Guangxi and Hunan.

2019 — Founded ChinaPhotographyTrip.com

Launched the parent brand covering seven national-level photography themes: Guilin, Zhangjiajie, Guizhou, Xinjiang, Xiapu, Yunnan, and Tibet.

2025 — Established ZhangjiajiePhotoTour.com

A dedicated destination brand for the three thousand peaks — focused entirely on unlocking Zhangjiajie's light for photographers from around the world.

Specialization

Karst Light, Chinese Composition

With deep roots in local landscape photography, I have mastered the light patterns and location characteristics of karst landforms — where the weather changes by the hour and the best frames exist for minutes, not hours.

My work specializes in combining traditional Chinese painting composition with modern landscape photography — negative space, layered mist, and vertical rhythm — precisely capturing sunrise, sunset, blue hour, sea of clouds, and other spectacular moments.

📷

Camera Body

Canon EOS Mark IV with 24–105mm — my workhorse for dawn shoots and low light.

🌄

Aerial System

DJI Mavic 4 Pro for aerial perspectives of peaks, terraces, and river bends.

15+ Hour Service Days

From 04:00 summit departures to 20:30 returns — we follow the light, not the clock.
